چکیده

An UV-sensitive class of photoreceptors exists in all regions of the retinas of mantis shrimps. UV photosensitivity apparently resides in rhabdomeres of the eighth retinular cell (RS) that lies atop each rhabdom; and in ommatidia where the Rg rhabdomere consists of microvilli parallel in a single direction, ~nsiti~~ is maximal when the e-vector of plainly light is parallel to the mi~ro~Ui, Spectral sensitivity of the UV ~otor~eptor peaks at 345 um and is best explained by the presence of a photopigment with I.,,,,., near 325 nm overlain by material that absorbs UV light at wavelengths below z 350 nm. Rhabdomeres of RS cells in several different retinal regions of a variety of species examined contain a photopigment absorbing maximally below 340 nm. Under appropriate conditions, a metapigment with A,,,,, near 460 nm can be formed. UV vision may be useful for enhancing the visual contrast of midwater predators or prey.

Parallel processing and image analysis in the eyes of mantis shrimps.

The compound eyes of mantis shrimps, a group of tropical marine crustaceans, incorporate principles of serial and parallel processing of visual information that may be applicable to artificial imaging systems. Their eyes include numerous specializations for analysis of the spectral and polarizational properties of light, and include more photoreceptor classes for analysis of ultraviolet light, ...

Biological Sunscreens Tune Polychromatic Ultraviolet Vision in Mantis Shrimp

VIDEO ABSTRACT Stomatopod crustaceans, or mantis shrimp, are renowned for their complex visual systems. Their array of 16 types of photoreceptors provides complex color reception, as well as linear and circular polarization sensitivity [1-6]. The least-understood components of their retina are the UV receptors, of which there are up to six distinct, narrowly tuned spectral types [4]. Here we sh...

Mantis shrimp allergy.

We report the case of a 25-year-old female who experienced two immediate episodes of labial, lingual and larynx angiodema after eating fried mantis shrimp (Squilla empusa), a crustacean belonging to the Squillidae family, and a third episode after eating shellfish pudding. Prick by prick tests to mantis shrimp and to other crustacean were positive. Serum specific IgE showed higher values than 0...

Vision: Two Plus Four Equals Six

Using two UV-sensitive visual pigments and the UV-filtering properties of four mycosporine-like amino acids, mantis shrimp create six spectrally distinct UV receptors. This is yet another example of the unique ways in which mantis shrimp have adapted to extract information from their visual world.

A different form of color vision in mantis shrimp.

One of the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom can be found in species of stomatopod crustaceans (mantis shrimp), some of which have 12 different photoreceptor types, each sampling a narrow set of wavelengths ranging from deep ultraviolet to far red (300 to 720 nanometers). Functionally, this chromatic complexity has presented a mystery. Why use 12 color channels when three or four are suff...
